Gerard\u2019s eyes lit up. \u201cOf course!\u201d he cried. \u201cYou said that Grandfather was a master of its power, and that he didn\u2019t even need it to become Archmage. Imagine what he could do with it now! Would he not be like a demigod, were he to wield the full force of its might?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI have always thought so,\u201d the King mused. \u201cAnd though he never said as much, I believe that is why he eschewed using it, and bequeathed it to me as soon as he could.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gerard frowned. \u201cI don\u2019t understand,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYour grandfather is the greatest wizard in all of Kalara, Gerard,\u201d Danor explained. \u201cAnd heir to its greatest throne. But he has always disliked the very idea of wielding power over others. That is why he was always such a reluctant king. It\u2019s why he refused the crown until he had no choice \u2014 when his brother, King Victor, was killed, and he was the last of our line.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat does that have to do with the ring?\u201d Gerard asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt has an effect on the wearer. More so over time, and the more it is used. It \u2026 encourages the temperament to wield its power to rule. That, at least in part, is what it was made for. It takes wisdom and strength of will to keep that influence in check.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI see,\u201d Gerard said. \u201cHas it affected you, too, then, Father?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTo an extent,\u201d the King replied slowly. \u201cBut I spent many years under your grandfather\u2019s tutelage, studying how to rule justly and wisely. And the unique bond I have with your mother has also helped to keep me grounded.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He glanced at Elena, and she smiled at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo that\u2019s why he abdicated in your favor when you were old enough to take the throne,\u201d Gerard said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd why he gave the ring to me when he did,\u201d Danor added. \u201cI can\u2019t think of anyone with less of a taste for the role of \u2018demigod\u2019 than your grandfather.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
