He leaned in toward the viewing port, looking at it intently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCan you get us closer?\u201d he asked suddenly. \u201cI want a look at this general of theirs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t think it\u2019s Emil?\u201d Elena asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Danor shook his head. \u201cZomoran may be calling himself a Warlord now, but he\u2019s no military commander. Someone else is directing this attack.\u201d He paused, and then added: \u201cOr some thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI can try,\u201d Gerard said. The image in the viewport shifted, flying down toward the hellgate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere,\u201d Danor said suddenly, pointing. \u201cAbout halfway between the dome and the marketplace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The image slowed to a stop. In its center, they saw a demon with a snake-like head perched atop a long, serpentine neck. Its skin was scaly and its body reptilian, with long, slender limbs. Although it looked small and weak for a demon, something in its bearing \u2014 and in the deference it received from the monsters around it \u2014 filled them with dread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo powerful,\u201d Elena whispered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Danor glanced at her. She was staring at the creature, but with her eyes closed, as if looking at it with an inner sight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never sensed anything like it,\u201d she said. Her voice was trembling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nor will you again, Queen Elena<\/em>, a voice said menacingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They started. They had heard the voice not with their ears, but in their minds. It spoke softly, but with a commanding intensity that struck them with fear and awe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The King whirled back to the portal. The demon had turned to face it from the other side. Its single, great eye was looking right at them. A shiver ran down his spine as he realized that it could see them just as well as they could see it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
