Spring ’24 News – Cons and Book Sales!

March 13, 2024 by Tony Andarian Leave a Comment

Here’s some news for Spring 2024, from Andarian Publishing!

As I expect some have noticed, I’ve been largely inactive in my publishing activities over the last year. “Real Life” came down on us pretty hard in 2023, and I’ve had to divert time and focus from writing to deal with all of that. Even my new Substack has had to take a back seat to it. That’s likely continue for a few more months yet, but I do expect it to improve later in the year. I’m still determined to complete and publish at least the first half of Wrath of the Peregrine King before the end of 2024.

In the meantime, though, I do have plans to make some time to keep my author career alive until then. Here’s what’s coming up for me in 2024.

Current and Upcoming Book Sales

  • The EPIC Spring Sale is running now through the end of March, with over 70 books by some of the best indie fantasy and sci-fi authors โ€” including, of course, Dawn of Chaos. EPIC is a fantastic site that helps connect SF and Fantasy readers with indie authors, and it runs book sales every quarter. Check it out!
  • The Based Book Sales move to Substack with a new quarterly schedule. I’m a strong supporter of the Based Book Sales, and my work will always be in them. Independent thought in art and philosophy are high values of mine, and based books and the Iron Age movement are where to find those today. During the sales all books are available for free or $0.99. Be sure to check them out!
  • The Everyday Based Book Sale is launching for books that are always listed for free or $0.99. Since Dawn of Chaos (Sanctum of the Archmage, Volume One) is also available as a miniseries of novella-length “episodes” that are always in that price range, they’ll be listed in it.
  • The Spring Based Book Sale will run from March 27 through April 2. Here’s the link:
  • The LibertyCon Sale will run from June 19 through June 25.
  • The BasedCon Sale will run from September 4 through September 10.
  • The Based Black Friday Sale will run from November 27 through December 3.

Convention Appearances. I’m pleased to announce that I’ll be attending four Science Fiction and Fantasy fan conventions in 2024. The first was MarsCon in January, where I was proud to make my first appearance as a guest panelist. I had a fantastic time and met a lot of great people.

Here’s my con schedule for the rest of the year:

  • FantaSci in Durham, NC (April 19-21). This was my first SF/F con, when I came last year as an attendee. This year I’ll be a guest panelist there as well.
  • LibertyCon in Chattanooga, TN (June 21-23). I was there last year as an attendee, and this year I’ll be a guest panelist as well.
  • BasedCon (September 6-8). This will be my first time attending BasedCon, and I’m very much looking forward to it.

The Next Phase

April 21, 2023 by Tony Andarian Leave a Comment

It’s been a little over a year now since I was forced, early, into my planned “retirement pivot” to writing epic fantasy. I’ve devoted a lot of effort during that time to learning the ins and outs of indie publishing, building an online platform, and improving and re-releasing the first trilogy in my Sanctum of the Archmage Saga. I’m now writing the second volume in the series, working on an audiobook of the first, and planning a regular and ongoing release strategy to Substack and then to bookstores.

So I think it’s time to start a new phase in my publishing career, one that I’ve probably been putting off for too long. That’s to focus more on the roadblock that stymies most new authors: visibility. My work has essentially none, despite near universal raves from the few who’ve read and reviewed it. It’s easy to publish an indie book today; the trick is getting anyone to notice (much less buy) it, regardless of how good it might be.

I’ve been researching and making notes on indie publishing “best practices” for this, and I’m going to start devoting some serious time and effort into putting them into practice. If anyone has thoughts or advice on what’s working well for this in today’s market, I’m very interested in feedback on this โ€” so please feel free to comment. ๐Ÿ™‚

Prospectus 2023, Part 2

February 20, 2023 by Tony Andarian Leave a Comment

In my last post (Prospectus 2023, Part 1), I talked about how I’ve spent the last year getting over most of the “learning curve” for my new writing and publishing career. In this post, I’m going to talk a little about some of my plans for what to do with that new knowledge.

I’ll start with an update on my major task last week, which was to do a deep dive on the extensive documentation for Scrivener 3’s new features. Scrivener’s a fantastic writing tool for serious authors, and I’ve used it for most of the last decade. It has many powerful capabilities, and it takes a lot of time and study to learn how to use them fully. That’s especially true of some of the new ones added since the version 3 upgrade.

I learned enough of Scrivener’s new compile system last month to create the upload file for the new Dawn of Chaos paperback. I spent much of last week learning the rest, along with its new “style” system. As a result, I’ve now been able to create fully functional template for the upcoming books in the Sanctum saga. That’ll start with the next volume, Crucible of Heroes. All I have to do now is write them. ๐Ÿ˜

I’ve also made a “release strategy” decision on something that I’ve been debating for a while. I had decided to break Dawn of Chaos into an e-book trilogy consisting of a full-length novel (Hell Gate) sandwiched between prologue and epilogue novellas (Prologue to Chaos and Aftermath). I then released Dawn of Chaos as a “compilation volume” of all three, in e-book, print, and (coming soon), audiobook formats. That’s the pattern I’m planning to continue for the remainder of the nine planned volumes in the series. Each will come out first as a trilogy of e-books (consisting, typically, of two novels and a novella), which will then be published as a collection in e-book, print, and audio. So Sanctum of the Archmage will, essentially, be a ten volume series of trilogies.

I’m also planning to end an experiment I tried with further breaking the novels into a rapid-release series of “episodes,” as I did with Hell Gate. To put it simply, that just did not work out. So the next book, Wrath of the Peregrine King, will not be coming out in two parts, as I’d suggested in some of my newsletters last year. It will be a full length novel, and likely won’t be available until summer 2023. I am still thinking about whether I could develop an “interim release” strategy for parts of the series, so that interested readers might have a way to get some of it in installments. But if I do, it’ll likely be through a subscription service like Patreon or Locals, and wait until I actually have enough interested readers to make it worthwhile. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Wrath of the Peregrine King

In the meantime, I’m going to get busy on my two major book publishing projects: writing Wrath of the Peregrine King (WPK), and publishing Dawn of Chaos as an audiobook. Writing WPK will be especially interesting for me, because it’s the one book in the series that I didn’t already have an outline for. Readers may know that I’ve been working on this story “in my head” for decades, and that much of Volumes Three and Four (The Sight and The Miracle Worker) are already familiar to players of my Sanctum RP Adventure games. WPK represented a gap in the tale that needed to be filled, though, and I’m looking forward to finally filling it.

That’s all for now. In Part 3 of my “Prospectus 2023” series, I’ll go into some of my other upcoming project plans for the months and years ahead. I’m excited to talk about that because I feel very much as though this last year has been all about “getting things ready” for those future plans, and that 2023 will be the year when I can actually start moving forward on them. So stay tuned!

Prospectus 2023, Part 1

February 13, 2023 by Tony Andarian Leave a Comment

white ceramic cup with chocolate on white ceramic saucer

It’s the heart of winter here in the mid-Atlantic US. It’s the best time of year to curl up with a cup of hot chocolate, and a pile of nascent projects for a new year of writing and professional growth. So I thought I’d share some of them, in a series of posts starting with this one, over the next few weeks.

It’s been a while since I’ve had much to say publicly about my plans. That’s partly because I’m still learning and figuring out how to make this whole “start a publishing company and author career out of basically nothing” thing work, but I’m making progress. Agonizingly slow progress to be sure, and filled with sobering revelations about how much more learning and work such plans actually take to move forward, but progress nonetheless.

Fortunately, I’m over most of the “indie author learning curve” I began just under a year ago. I’ve figured out how to create and budget for indie business; how to publish wide; how to network with other authors, and, increasingly, potential readers; how to find artists and commission covers; how to publish e-books, and now, print books, on a schedule (more or less); and a host of other details too mundane to be of interest to anyone without a mild streak of masochism. Doing that while also figuring out how to adjust my life from having a full-time tech career to being a (not entirely willing) early retiree has been a challenge, but that’s working out as well.

The only major tasks left on my publishing “learning curve” are to figure out how to create and sell an audiobook, and how to effectively market and get visibility for my work. I should be able to work out the first over the next few months. The marketing part I saved for last, since it requires having at least a modest body of work in publication, and I expect it to be an ongoing and constantly adjusting process. There’s a simple reason for that: because no one in publishing has a formula for it. I’ve read up on it extensively, though, and I’m getting ready to try some things out on a larger and more consistent scale. Whatever else 2023 will be about for me, it’ll be that.

That, of course, and writing. Now that I’ve got enough things settled, I’m ready to resume work on the next novel in the Sanctum of the Archmage Saga: Crucible of Heroes – Wrath of the Peregrine King. That’s now officially back on the front burner again, and I’ll have more to say about it in Part II. ๐Ÿ™‚
